Jan Ponsford Voice and Art Workshops

Jan Ponsford
Jan Ponsford is hailed by press as one of the UK's more original and inspired vocalists, covering styles from jazz, blues, soul, gospel and funk through to latin, Celtic, eastern European and neo classical. Jan is a composer, lyricist, performer and recording artist working with world famous musicians, and teaches independently as well as at colleges and universities. She is also an exhibiting painter whose work is collected internationally, and designs interiors and gardens.

PRESS QUOTES

"Acclaimed as one of the top of the league for a long time... her music doesn't coast or avoid the sense of inventive tension between musicians"
John Fordham, The Guardian

"..one of the first to set the style that is now considered de rigueur for British vocalists."
Gus Garvey

"One of the UK's more original vocalists whose jazz sensibilities stretch further than the norm."
Time Out

"...the singer's insights into her material quickly win over listeners to her extremely musical cause."
Val Wilmer

"Her influences are diverse, including soul, funk, blues and last but not least, jazz - a discipline her voice luxuriates in. She really could sing the telephone book and make it sound interesting. In a class way above the current clutch of much hyped female singers."
Highly Strung Magazine

"Jan Ponsford has also been down to Delta Studio to record some voice over my loops - that'll be on the next collection. She's a marvel. Great improviser and can also sing great harmonies to songs."
Hugh Hopper (ex-Softmachine)

"...as famous for her freely improvised work as for her skill in interpreting both jazz and popular material.”
The Times

Voice workshops

Jan is one of the leading exponents of voice workshops with 30 years experience in music education. If you can speak, you can sing. Jan will show you how to sing with her original vocal production method which is designed to develop confidence, musicality and vocal quality.   It is suitable for beginners through to performing and recording artists. You don't have to read music. Singing is your birthright and there are many cultures around the world that enjoy singing without reading notated music. The workshops are friendly and supportive, and cover relaxation, visualisation, fun left/right brain hemisphere exercises, breathing techniques, aural awareness, understanding the vocal 'machinery', harmony with group and solo singing, and an introduction to Alexander technique to help posture. Students will be taken through the 'vocal gym' and are advised to wear loose, comfortable clothing as some gentle movement is involved.

Art workshops

Painter Jan Ponsford will help you develop your creative vision, colour sense and painting skills with a short course in Impressionism using acrylics. The fabulous Greek light and local features lend themselves brilliantly to Impressionism and painting 'al fresco'. The course covers ways of seeing, colour mixing and application, composition and interpretation of subjects. Students are advised to bring their favourite  brushes and acrylic colours or, if beginners, then a selection of acrylic colours in tubes (small packs are available in a basic colour range) along with short, flat, hogs hair brushes in a selection of sizes they feel they would like to work with. Also bring either an acrylic paper pad (minimum A3 size) or five primed boards (size optional) suitable for painting with acrylic, an A4 sketch pad and soft pencil. (All items are available from art shops).
