SKALA ERESSOS on the greek island of Lesvos
The holiday resort of Skala Eressos which has been a haven for lesbian women for over 30 years and is a popular location for women travellers from all over the world. Originally women were drawn here to visit the birthplace of Sappho, beginning with a handful who came here in the early 1900's before the village became a tourist resort. In the 1970's groups of women began to arrive and started women's camps on the beach.
Skala Eressos now attracts lesbians of all ages and backgrounds throughout the summer and has a vibrant women's community who live here all year round. Although a small and traditional village, women visitors are welcomed with open arms and there is a freedom to express yourself here that exists in few other places in Europe. Many return here year after year to meet old friends and make new ones and the resort is one of the most popular locations for women friendly holidays in Europe.
